MME-TIME Thesis Challenge

For our students from the RWTH Business School, we are offering a "Thesis Challenge" as an alternative format for a master thesis. The challenge is theoretically based around our research focus “Regional Innovation".

Theoretical background

Regional innovation policies focus increasingly on systemic innovation approaches. We are using the innovation ecosystem theory to better understand new forms of collaboration. But how does the regional dimension affect the innovation ecosystem perspective?

What does the business school challenge involve?

Interested students can choose between two different variants of the challenge. The challenge differs not only in terms of the object of study, but also in terms of the scientific approach. The variants are structured as follows:

Option 1 (Conceptional) Option 2 (Empirical)
Working Title Exploring the landscape of quantitative research approaches in innovation ecosystem literature Exploring the landscape of quantitative research approaches in innovation ecosystem literature
Approach Conceptional Empirical
Methodology Literature Review Case Study Research
Key Words Innovation Ecosystems; Literature Review; Theories; Quantitative Research Innovation Ecosystems; Core Regions; Peripheral Regions; Inter-Ecosystem Integration; Case Study; Interviews
Key Questions
  • What theories have been used so far to analyse ecosystems quantitatively?
  • What are the variables used?
  • How do the models look like (mediation/ moderation)?
  • How to transfer knowledge from previous network research?
  • How do core and peripheral regions interact?
  • Are peripheral regions benefit from core regions / cities and vice versa?
  • How to map the knowledge-flows?
