Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is an extension of the Ethernet standards (IEEE 802.3) with the aim of establishing the already widespread IP-based data communication in applications where other (fieldbus) networks have been used so far.

Currently, SPE is in an early phase of the technology and life cycle. While SPE is already more widely used in new vehicles in the automotive sector, the technology is largely at the beginning of its establishment in other markets. However, high technical and economic advantages (e.g. reduction of material, installation space and costs, continuous real-time communication) make SPE particularly attractive for the factory, process and building automation markets, so that the trade press also speaks of a key technology for the IIoT.

The thesis aims to analyze the market potential of SPE in detail and to derive recommendations for action for a strategic product portfolio alignment. The focus is on SPE device connection technology and cabling, which is an important component in SPE systems.
