Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) and Business Model Innovation
Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the University of Nottingham have been collaborating on projects exploring the ways Additive Manufacturing -3D Printing (AM-3DP) is changing - or could change - current business models in a variety of sectors, and exploring the way in which these technologies could have a wider impact. This same team has also been gathering evidence to support the development of a UK National Strategy for AM-3DP. This presentation will provide an overview of the results of this research on AM-3DP-enabled business model innovation, highlight some of the current barriers and opportunities as perceived by UK manufacturing industry, and explore possible areas of future work that could link with researchers at RWTH Aachen. Particular areas of interest are (1) the link between engineering education/skills and the diffusion of AM-3DP technologies and (2) the role of collaborations in overcoming some of the barriers to diffusion.
